In Aztec culture, cacao was reserved exclusively for the gods until Quetzalcoatl, to celebrate his wedding, offered it to common men. The gods retaliated and killed his wife. It is said that Quetzalcoatl's tears sprang into the cacao tree, which was used for a sacred beverage mixed with the orchid flower of vanilla.
